my culture shock 2

The next week we will have the discussion about the culture shock.

I think the culture to me can depart into two parts. The one is in the study, the another is in the life.

In the study, influenced by the chinese education for 20 years, we used to listen to the teacher in the classroom and never ask question when we don't know the meaning. Because we think if we ask the question, it will lose our face and look like a fool. Another different from china is that whatever the work we done, the teacher also say it is good, excellent, well done or it is ok. They give us more encourage and more freeness in the study and encourage us to think our idea, not everything to conform to the teachers' direction, not follow and we can think an idea together. And to our surprise is that we can called the teacher as their name. But in china, we also call the teacher such as teacher Li or teacher Wang. It showed the respect to them. But in london, when we cannot understand what the teacher said, we can say "mark, I can't understand it, can you explain it again?" And the teacher is pleased to explain it again till you can understand. 

In the life, I will my experience about relationship, traffic and so on.

In china, people don't kiss or hug somebody of the opposite sex in public places. But in london, I was surprised to see the people kissing in front of me. In another hand, in Asian countries, homosexual is a few exist. Even though they are homosexual, they will always hide it as a secret. So two girls and two boys can walk together hand in hand and no one was shocked. But when I was came in london, the first day I went to the supermarket with Susan, and I was used to hand in somebody, but she told me that in london, I should change my habit. Because in london other people will regard you are homosexuality.

Another thing is that when I went to eat with vera and when we finished, we paid together. But we found someone sit next to us, which pay themselves each other. Then I knew in the western country, they  advocated economic  independent and they always  put in practice the rule of "AA" . 

Then I will write something about traffic. In china the traffic lights will regularly to work. But in london, if some people want to cross the road, they can press the button and then after a moment, the traffic lights will turn red and people can cross the road. I think it is very reasonable, because if in the midnight, the car can go straightway. And one day, I stood away the road, but there is no traffic lights in the crossing, I think I will wait more time when there are no car pass. But it is surprised to me when a car pass, it stopped and  hint that I can go cross the road first. At that time, I think the traffic in london order in london is very good.

After somedays, it seem to be more familiar to the london. So I went to the market by myself and I want to buy a lot of food. So I want to have a go-cart, but I found I can't move it. Then a old man come to me and told me that I should put one pond in it then I can move it. But I have no coin, so he give me one pond and let the go-cart for me. I think I am very lucky to meet a kind man.

There are many things about the culture shock to my experience. I think there will be more culture shock wait for me and I will suit here well in the future. Because after 2 months studying, I become more confident than before with the help of stefanie.

Recently we all discuss the topic about the culture shock. But what is the culture shock? There are many definition for the culture shock on the Internet, such as "culture shock refers to the anxiety and feelings (of surprise, disorientation, uncertainty, confusion, etc.) felt when people have to operate within a different and unknown cultural or social environment, such as a foreign country. It grows out of the difficulties in assimilating the new culture, causing difficulty in knowing what is appropriate and what is not. This is often combined with a dislike for or even disgust (moral or aesthetical) with certain aspects of the new or different culture." But as to me, culture shock materialize in every aspect in my daily life, such as food, climate, language, leisure time and so on and so forth. But I will emphasize on the leisure  time.

In china, the weekends the people will in the home to do some house working or go out do some shopping with the friends and family. But in london, most of the shops are closed on the weekend. But the people also go out to have their weekends. They are often find a lawn to have the picnic or just lying to enjoy the sun. And the parents are not just look at the children who playing with others, they always play with the children. The scene will moved me. Because in china, the parents just look after the children and protect them from hurting. As my opinion, the parents should play the game with the children and know what they think and how they grow up. Though in china the parents also accompany children grow up, but the style is different and then the result will be different too. Additionally in china there are many people do working on the weekend, they don't have the rest. But in london, I find most the people have a nice weekend though they have many work to do. They will put them for a while and enjoy their weekend. And I often see some bicyclists on the street because this is the life style to them. They will do some sports on their daily life. I think it's good for their healthy.

All the following are the leisure time in the culture shock, I will continue to write the other aspect. Because I should organize my report now. I am do some mistakes in my presentation, so I should do better in the report!

the end or the beginning

We have finished the block one of the pre-session course last friday. I think I should conclude the learning about the past one month. 

Because of my character, the beginning of the half month, I didn't open my mouth to speak in class. So I only practice my listening. However, a friend of mine pass away which awake me to face the problem that can't speak in the class. With some classmates' suggestion, I try to join the discussion, try to do the presentation, try to answer the question to the teacher. Maybe the two weeks, I make a progress in my speaking and writing. Nevertheless, it is clearly to show me that is not enough. So I will be have another class in afternoon to make a improvement to catch up with other students.

On the Thursday morning, Fiona told us that in the block two will be a challenge wait for us. I think I should work harder to make up the lack of the knowledge. 

On the aspect of the speaking, is the big problem in my English learning. Then FEN told me if I want to practice my speaking, I can watch the movie and follow them to repeat the sentence which is a good way to improve my thinking. Because sometimes I can't speak a complete sentence. When I want to express my idea, I also speak some words due to the my thinking is also in chinese. I think I will try to watch movie and follow them to learn how to recognize   the sentence.On the writing, I will continue to write essay or diary after class. About the listening, I think hold the time in the class, it will be improve.

A paragraph about plagiarism

Plagiarism is an action of copy others ideas without any acknowledgement of source. According to the Longman Dictionary of contemporary English(1995), define that use others ideas and words as your own ideas when you write the essay is plagiarism. The oxford(1992) presented the plagiarism as---"a kidnapper or literary thief ". However, the book Academic Writing(1989) conclude that the national students have different academic background, so they will not realize they have copy the ideas from books, articles and newspapers should be show the sourced. So they are always intentionally to plagiarism.

what is Globalisation

According to the controversial argument, globalisation was the bone of contention in the past 10 years, as a result, a large amount of books investigate the globalisation as the subject and the reason of major demonstrations in Europe and North America. Some people are against the globalisation, which  caused mangy problems and disrupted their lives also returned few benfits. Others think that can reduce the poverty, particularly in China, Vietnam, India and Uganda. However, it is amazing that the globalisation was used widely but it doesn't to defined accurate. In fact the breadth of the meaning and take on cultural, political and other connotations in addition to the econmic, so it become narrowing over time. All the same, the general or main sense of economic globalisation, is to emphasis on the observation which conduce to develop the economic quickly these years, then make people live in different countries. This growth in cross-border economic activities takes various forms:

The ways of seeing

In our pre-language class, we watched a documentary which "the ways of seeing". It shows the different between the oil painting and publicity. It is similar but not the same.

Firstly, the author introduce the ADS are surrounding our life. It is why we want to alter the way of our life, then become a glamour girl or boy. People spend a lot of money to buy something, then from richer to poorer, and change their face, body which result in enviable. And then he concluded that without the society, glamour can not be exist.

Secondly, he illustrated that the oil painting described the fact of the life, such as sense, value and so on. The sources from the pose, gesture, sign of love. But compared to the ADS, it shows a dream for the people. The publicity purpose is make each of people to consume, to meet our desire, eager to our life.

Thirdly, he give us a question, why the glamour did not exist in the middle century. Because of the background of the society. We can easily to find how important about the society status in the history. So people can't have the dream, their life can change with their desire.

I think the documentary is value to investigate the arts and life, which explains many reason about the arts in now days. He also to compare the different aspect of the art to analyze the valuable. 

At all, it is a good lesson for us to think about the Art and life. Then give us a new angle to see the world.

Structure and Cohesion

    I had borrowed a book from the library some days ago. However, last week we were busy in preparing the Dragon Dan Marketing Plan, therefore I didn't begin to read it.

    

    Today, after the face to face talk with the teacher, I aware that I have mangy problem about the language learning, such as speaking, writing, pronunciation and so on. In order to keep up with other students, thus I will be make more effort at learning English.

    I begin to read the book is called Academic Writing Course. The unit 1 is structure and cohesion, which  concerned with he general organization of a piece of academic writing, its structure and particularly the way in which the different parts are linked together. And we also write an essay, which organized in a similar way - introduction, development of main ideas or arguments, conclusions. But how to link the sentence by means of connective?

BASIC WORD:

AND --- so, therefore, as a result, accordingly, consequently, thus, hence

OR --- in other words, to put it more simply, it would be better to say

BUT --- however, nevertheless, nonetheless, yet, in spite of that, all the same

For example:

1. He passed his examinations.

    Therefore/So/As a result/Accordingly/Consequently/Thus/Hence he had some good news to tell his parents.

Then when we write the academic essays, we can use to express the meaning of AND, OR, BUT, which can link the sentences in the content.

 

A Survey of General Personal Views

    On 21th July 2009, an instant survey was carried out among 5 students in Mark's pre-sessional 09 class 8, which the group including kathy, miao, Oat, shadow and yun.

    From the table of data, the most popular color was blue, selected by 40%, followed by black, purple, yellow each chosen by 20%. Nobody chose grey, brown, red and so on. 20% of the people said had none luck number, 7 was chosen by 40%, 6 and 8 was  selected by 20% each.

The age group 26-30 years was the main time selected to married, chosen by 60%, this was followed by 31-35 years. The  most important qualities in an ideal parter, honest was selected by 27%, this was followed by confident and humorous, each occupying 20%. While  7% indicated attractive, intelligent, ambitions, loving and kind. The ideal number of children was 2 chosen by 60%, while 40% indicated none children they want to have.

    If any conclusions may be drawn from the data, they are, perhaps, as follows, about half of the people presumably like blue. The most lucky numbers, in order was 6 and 8. Probably, most of their may be married at the ideal age of 26-30 with honest parter and may be have 2 children.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

                     The future like the light which should we hard work to achieve!

What a depressing thing! 

I go to the ODEOM cinema to see the film which called Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince today. Then after the movie finished, I find I can not understand. When we are ready to go to the movie, we think it should to have English subtitles, or through body language may be able to understand about the mainly story. However, probably what the story told we did not understand, also only understand the point of laugh through the film.

I think when we have the ability to go to the movie and understand the story, we succeed in learning English!

which town I want to live

On the weekend, I go to the EGHAM with VERA. And the slow pace of life and the kind of person which made me look forward to living there.

I google in the website, it is said that EGHAM is a small town in the Runnymede borough of Surrey, in the south-east of England And it is part of the London commuter belt.

When we got off train and then saw a wide green lawn next the train station which a lot of cute kids playing together. When we walked in a small way and saw the people around a dinner by the roadside restaurants which full of fun atmosphere. When we saw the market which to change the old things in a church only on the weekend and the things are also amusing. 

What a lovely small town!

I have been in London more than half a month and I got used to life here. 

For the class, I become to understand what the teacher said and begin to talk with the students in group occasionally. 
I think the poor English as one result that I can't speak in the classroom. And the second reason is that my character is too shy, so I can't participate in class discussion actively. In most cases are listen to panel members said the views what they think about. 

Last week we had a presentation about the new project into the market. And I want to break through that I can not be open the mouth  and lack of the status of self-confidence, so finally I cooperated with other partners in the group to introduce the product. In the process of doing this presentation, I got a lot of help and encourage from FEN. When we discuss the positioning of the market, the USP of product, established the brand, as well as the ability of a competitive market, she also encouraged me to say my opinion. Then the final product was made out, we are all still very satisfactory. Although we did not get the support of many people, but after this exercise, I believe I have become confident and I will continue to urge me to join their discussion.

What is Memory

    What exactly is "memory"?

    

    Memory is the accumulation of impressions of the people and things that you meet. In other words, these impressions must be your own experiences. But some places which you have never been give you a sense of familiar feeling. How do you explain it? Why does London always make me feel so familiar. Maybe "old soul" really exists. And it has been living in my mind. These senses of similar could be a part of the memory from my part life. But I am not sure anymore whether I'm love with this place because of my dream? Or is it fate that bring me here?

    I saw a film just now. It combines with 4 stories to tell us when we met love, we should control the chance. And I most like the first story. It saying a couple when the male cover a severity sick, he want to find a voice which the same as him. Then when he was dead, he want the same voice replace himself  to call his girl friend every year.

    On the 1st year------ I know that you have to cry, But don't forget to eat to maintain the energy to keep crying.

    On the 2nd year------I am practicing baseball down here. Hope I will be bette than Babe Ruth in my next life.

   

    On the 3ed year------I am still wearing the sweater, But the two sleeves are not even,  you should practice more.

    On the 4th year------The person who can eat more than 20 eggs at one time must be deeply in love with you.

    On the 5th year------There is no Jedi Knight on earth. But he who's willing to fight with you with Lightsaber all night long. If you can met one, you will definitely met another one.

    On the 6th year------It is dark in the elevator, but somebody's going to open the door.

    On the 7th year------I will going back to the world. These things happen. I was gone, but we'll meet again. Thank for you missing me. But don't ignore the whole world because  you miss me too much.

WHAT IS DISTANCE

    On the weekend, I went to visit the RCA exhibition of graduate design with my friends. Although  many works I can't understand, at lest see the gap between my country's design.

    I also have been unable to understand some people have said that to broaden your horizons. But now I finally understand that the world's great original and creative are valuable.

    Last week we had a classroom quiz, I got a bad score. But I think  it is a beginning, I will take more practice.

    I read a book, it says why in chinese we use the "far" to describe time? Then I translate it .

"Is the "far" as an adjective to describe time? Far represents as distance. But is the time have distance? We can say that from shanghai to shengzheng have 1434 kilometers which is accessible by plane or train to get there. We can say that we go to the convenience stores about 500 meters which take 11 minutes to reach there. We also can say that we are away from the examination about 10 days which we can not by car or by plane or walk to reach. Whether can we come to the future or go back to the past?  The answer is NO. Then why we use the "far" to describe  the distance? But if we don't use the "far" to describe the time, what should we to use describe the time?

    OK,THE ANSWER IS long or short!

    What a magic between the culture difference! In chinese can't search a word to describe the time, we often say distance do something have some time.

    I didn't know what I say. But I know time is left, I should make more efforts on my English learning.

    

The first day

    Jun 28th is the first day I came to the London. Because of the flight delay, I was late for one hour. And the when talk to the customs, he told me to see the doctor, I guess he figure me the lunacy. But in the fact that I haven't physical check-up. What a funny joke!  

   

     I come from China, so have time different from here about seven hours. This picture was on the first morning about 3 o'clock when I can't sleep and look out of the window, the sky has to become brightly. I think it is a beautiful morning, and I miss my parents very much. This is the first time I left my parents to another country for a long time.

    

    Now I have the language lesson in the LCC with the classmates who come from different kinds of countries. I know my English is very poor. I will put more effort into my language learning.
